Top 5 Players in ISL History
By Harsal Nagarkar:
Ever since its inception in 2014 ISL or the Indian Super League has been the flag bearer of football in India. It has been only four seasons, and already, ISL has produced several unforgettable moments etching them forever in the hearts of football fans all over the world to cherish forever.
The skill and talent that ISL endorses is the reason why it has become so popular in such little time. The fifth and current season of ISL commenced in September this year.
ISL revolutionized football in India. Making unknown local players and even the international ones a household name. Over the years ISL saw many talented footballers, both local and foreigners but a handful of them rose to prominence and became the face of ISL as we see it today. In this article, we are going to look at the Top 5 Players in the ISL so far.
#5. Sandesh Jhingan
The 25 year old Indian center-back has earned himself quite a reputation in the ISL. Jhingan was signed by Kerala Blasters for the inaugural season of ISL. His 2014 performances made him the highest paid Indian in 2015 draft of ISL, when he was retained by Kerala Blasters. However, Sandeep couldn’t contribute much and the Blasters ended last in the season conceding 27 goals. Jhingan played in the right-back position in the coming 2016 season, taking his team to the second finals in three seasons. Jhingan was announced the captain for the Blasters in the 2017-18 season.
#4. Marcelinho
The Brazilian singer Marcelo Leite Pereira or Marcelinho is fourth on our list. Marcelinho joined ISL with Delhi Dynamos in the third season of ISL in which he won the golden boot with 10 goals. He is currently playing with FC Pune City. The 31 year old brings a lot of experience and composure to the team. As someone who can play in both the winger positions, he also plays as a second striker sometimes.
#3. Sunil Chhetri
The third on our top 5 list is none other than the former Indian captain Sunil Chhetri. He captains Bengaluru FC, who finished first in the ISL Table in 2017-18, their first season in the league. With second highest number of International goals, Chhetri is in the same tier as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. He is the top scorer for India (65 goals). He is also the Indian with maximum no. of goals in ISL(26 goals). He became the ‘Hero of the League’ in the 2017-18 season.
#2. Iain Hume
The 35 year old Canadian who plays for Pune City is second in our list. Iain Hume is one of the two leading goalscorers in ISL having worked 28 goals so far. Iain’s ISL career has been an illustrious one with him being involved with three transfers in the five season old ISL so far. Hume was signed by Kerala Blasters in the 2014 season, from where he went to Atletico de Kolkata for two seasons. Hume made a comeback to Kerala’s side in the 2017-18 season. He was signed by FC Pune City in the beginning of the new and current season of ISL.
#1. Coro
In case you are wondering who Coro is, and why is he number one in the list even though you might have never actually heard of him, let me tell you it’s not your fault. Because Coro is a relatively new name in the world of ISL. Ferran Corominas Telechea, or as he is popularly known as, Coro, is a Spanish professional footballer who plays in the ISL for FC Goa. The FC Goa number 8 joined the club and the league in the 2017-18 season and wreaked havoc to the scoresheets. 18 goals in 20 appearances, that’s something ISL was yet to see. Coro gave the audience what it had come to see. There has been no stopping the Spaniard ever since. He has already scored another 10 goals to his tally this season making him the leading goalscorer along with Iain Hume tied at 28 goals
